Fashion File: 10 Facts About ‘Pretty Little Liars’ Lucy Hale’s Girly-Chic Style

image

As Aria Montgomery (a.k.a. Rosewood’s resident “weird girl”) on Pretty Little LiarsLucy Hale sports quirky styles that fans around the world have adored –and added to their own wardrobes! But the 24-year-old actress behind one-fourth of PLL’s main crew has an enviable fashion sense of her own. When she’s not starring in Bongo ads or serving as the face of Avon’s mark, she’s making a splash in the world of street style with her fabulous ensembles. We did a little digging to bring you 10 fast facts about Lucy’s lovely style, because who wouldn’t want to look like an “A”-lister (pun intended)?

image

1. If you’re drooling over the designer duds on Shopstyle while your pals are obsessing over Candy Crush Saga, you’d probably find a partner in shopping crime in Lucy. She told Teen Vogue, “I could talk about online shopping all day—I’m always on Etsy, Freepeople.com, and Shopstyle.” This gal has great taste, if we do say so ourselves.

2. Lucy picked up a thing or two about designers from PLL costume designer Mandi Line. Among the starlet’s favorites? Marc JacobsDior, and Chanel. Swoon!

3. Despite looking ah-may-zing now, Lucy has made her share of style mistakes. Among her list of most memorable faux paus, she recalls wearing snow leopard pants in fifth grade. Hey, it could have been worse (velour tracksuits with Crocs, anyone?)!

4. Aria might be a risk-taker when it comes to personal style, but it took Lucy years to develop the fashion sense we know, love, and desperately want to steal. She told Seventeen, “When I was 17, I was very plain, I didn’t take risks at all. And now I have fun with what I wear, so I’m more adventurous.” Keep those outfits coming, Lucy!

image

5. Her list of style icons includes Kate MossSienna MillerMiley Cyrus, and Vanessa Hudgens. Hard to argue with those, no?

image

6. The progressivelydaring Lucy’s style motto has become, “If it’s cute, I’ll buy it.” She explained to FabSugar, “It doesn’t necessarily have to be my style…I will try anything once. It may work, it may not.” And when you’re living on a Hollywood-sized paycheck, you can totally afford to test the style waters!

7. Lucy’s go-to outfit is effortlessly chic and totally on-trend. She told Who What Wear that it consists of “ankle-length skinny jeans, nude heels, an oversized flowy girly top, and a little black blazer that’s fitted in the arms and at the waist.” Can you say perfect?

8. As for favorite wardrobe pieces, Lucy has two: a vintage black lace strapless dress and her Steve Madden motorcycle boots. We’d like to see her wear them…at the same time (you’re also imagining how awesome they would look together, right?)!

9. Sometimes, the best pieces aren’t the ones you drop half a paycheck on at Tiffany’s, but the ones you DIY. Lucy told Glitter magazine that she loves to get crafty with her baubles. “I bead my own bracelets all the time and have even worn some of my stuff on the show before,” she said.

10. Though Lucy and Aria probably wouldn’t swap wardrobes, Lucy still sees her PLL character as a role model for girls. She said in an interview, “Aria’s very different and quirky. She’s a little bit more out there than I am. I’m definitely more girly and I like to get dressed up and I like Aria because she does whatever she wants. She doesn’t care what other people think and I think that’s great for girls to see – that she’s not out there trying to impress anyone, she’s just being herself and that’s really cool.”

Cute Overload: Rescue Dogs Steal the Show at Stella McCartney’s Spring 2014 Presentation

We’ve long admired vegetarian designer Stella McCartney’s commitment to never use leather or furs in her fashion-forward designs. But for spring 2014, she took her love for furry friends one step further with a presentation that’ll woof you.

While the line’s vibrant hues and playful embellishments had us drooling and the guest list was chock full of A-listers like MadonnaLiv TylerKate Bosworth, and Cameron Diaz, three playful pooches stole the show.

As part of an awareness-raising campaign, McCartney teamed up with the ASPCA to feature a trendsetting canine trio. The label posted a great shot of Harold, a 13-year-old miniature poodle, on Twitter. Just look at that face!  According to his adoption listing, this little guy loves “meeting new people and telling them he loves them and staying right by your side on a leash.” All together now: awww.

Also making a bark were Scooby, a 12-year-old Chihuahua/Shiba Inu mix, and Daisy (not listed). Here’s to hoping these stylin’ doggies find their forever homes soon!

Model Lily Cole’s Rubber Jewelry Line Makes Saving the Rainforest Look Chic

Back in 2012, stunning English model and actress Lily Cole served as ambassador for the Body Shop’s Beauty With Heart campaign to emphasize the brand’s fair-trade, cruelty-free values. More recently, she launched Impossible.com, a social network aimed at creating a “peer-to-peer gift economy.” And now, this do-gooder is continuing her altruism with a brand new line of Brazilian rainforest-sourced rubber jewelry for StylePick.com. Cole personally designed the line in an effort to help preserve rainforests by using wild rubber over plantation rubber.

“Right now there isn’t a market distinction between wild rubber and plantation rubber,” Cole told The Telegraph. “Essentially it costs more to produce wild rubber because it’s a much more manual, less industrialised process; local tappers have to go into the forest and tap the trees accordingly. In the short-term the land is more valuable for cattle farming, so currently there isn’t enough of a financial incentive to do wild rubber trading, to protect the forest from being deforested.”

Though sadly, every piece flew off the virtual shelves within the first 24 hours of launching, more rings, earrings, and necklaces are on their way. Prices range from £10 for earrings to £25 for necklaces and 100 percent of profits from every sale are donated to the WWF and Sky Rainforest Rescue. Affordable-chic jewelry for a great cause? Now that’s what we’d call a win-win.

Saturday Obsession: Sarah Jessica Parker’s Nordstrom Line (Shoes!)

image

As the designer-clad Carrie Bradshaw on Sex and the City, Sarah Jessica Parker became known for her ability to strut through the streets of New York City in the latest fashions and sky-high Manolos. And now, the seasoned actress has a line in the works for Nordstrom, which will consist of shoes (shocker!), purses, and trench coats.

“We’re putting new colors together that people don’t typically do, just beautiful combinations that you wish existed in your closet,” Parker told Vogue. “And in terms of bags, thinking about that period of the seventies into the eighties, what those women were carrying, taking away the bells and the whistles and hardware and really making it about the bag.”

Slated to debut in-store next year, the line will simply be called SJP and prices will range from $200 to $300 for footwear and under $700 for bags. The best part? Parker teamed up with Manolo Blahnik CEO George Malkemus, so there’s a 99.99% chance this collection is going to be completely swoon-worthy!

Fashion File: 13 Fast Facts On Pop Duo Tegan and Sara’s Tomboy Style

image

Things are looking up for Canadian twins Tegan and Sara Quin. Their seventh album, Heartthrob, has been garnering praise from critics and the mainstream attention it deserves. They’re both happily coupled –Tegan with photographer Lindsey Byrnes and Sara with former MTV employee Stacy Reader –and major fashion outlets like Glamour and Refinery29 have taken interest in their eclectic style, which is as lovable as their song lyrics. With that, here’s the scoop on their favorite brands, hair mishaps (involving rather unfortunate mullets), and what “older lady look” means.

image

1. It took the swoon-worthy pair years to perfect their swept tresses. They’ve rocked everything from ponytails to mullets, with varying degrees of success.

2. Speaking of hair, Tegan told Style.com that when she and Sara were five years old, they wore their locks in waist-length ringlets. “It was frizzy and a big freaking mess”, she explained. Most of us can relate, right Bettys?

image

3. Tegan has said that she would happily raid Justin Bieber’s closet. We can’t exactly say we’re surprised.

4. Like true pop/rock stars, the Quin twins understand the importance of a good leather jacket when on tour. And boots. And a nice pair of running shoes. “You want something easy to slip on and off,” Tegan explained in an interview.

5. As the big sister to twin girls, I remember them having identical dresses, shoes, and just about everything else. When Teen Vogue asked whether or not their mom followed in the footsteps of 90 percent of mamas to twins, Sara replied, “We were never necessarily drawn to what girls wore, and we were never necessarily drawn to what guys wore, we were sort of like in this ambiguous grey area in between, we were really sort of into gender neutral things, so there was usually only like one brown snowsuit, so we were like oh we’ll both have to get this one.” Who wants to bet they looked adorable?

image

6. Just when you thought they couldn’t get more endearing, Tegan recounted a dreaded first-day-of-school fashion blunder we’re all familiar with. She said, “We turned 12 and went into grade 7 and we came rushing home after the first day of school and we were like we’re nerds…help…and my mom’s like okay, we need to get you Doc Martens, we need to get you- you know GAP and you know Club Monaco were really cool. She was like, I told you guys when you were buying all those Mickey Mouse sweaters you weren’t going to be very cool, and that’s when we started paying attention to fashion.” At least it wasn’t tracksuits, Puma sneakers, and hoop earrings (aka things that should never be worn together).

7. Back in the ‘90s, the 5’2, then 100 lb twins used to wear their brawny step-father’s size 34 “man jeans”. Tegan said, “and then just like long underwear with a Nirvana t-shirt over top and a flannel shirt and a sweater over top and Doc Martens and a giant army jacket with a hoodie underneath it. And we’d look at each other before class and be like, you look good.”

8. Tegan has described their oft-copied personal style choices as a bit of Cyndi Lauper mixed with “straight-up rocker fashion”.

image

9. Calling all Tegan and Sara style fans: Opening Ceremony, Rag & Bone, and ACNE are three of their go-to labels. Tegan also has a thing for a good pair of Doc Martens.

10. In a pinch, Sara is known to hit the women’s section at Nordstrom to replenish her stash of button-ups, so keep your eyes peeled as you shop!

11. Sara’s casual uniform consists of an oversized tee, tights, and a leather jacket. Easy, breezy, beautiful!

image

12. In case you were wondering how Sara’s fondness for tights started, it was during a music video shoot. She explained, “Tegan had these pants hanging in her closet and I was like ‘These are awesome,’ and then when I grabbed them they were see-through tights with polka dots on them…So the stylist gave me these Spanx and I went into the bathroom and put these tights on and put the polka dot pants on. And all day long I was massaging my legs and touching my butt and I was like ‘This is the most comfortable thing I’ve ever worn.’ It feels like you’re wearing nothing. It’s so lovely. Anyways, so this has been my new thing.”

13. Last but not least, while Sara refers to twin Tegan’s style as “L.A. punk rock”, she says her own is more “older lady look” than anything else. “I just shop at where old ladies dress. I love the way that the shirts are cut,” she told Refinery29. Watch out, grandmas, ‘cause Sara’s comin’ for your duds.

Beauty Road Test: Pacific Illusions’ Cruelty-Free Shadows, Blush + Gloss

One cruelty-free brand that secured the Betty seal of approval months ago is Pacific Illusions Beauty. Its cruelty-free, summer-perfect offerings are fit for a Friday night stroll across the boardwalk or Saturday brunch date.

I had the chance to put three products from the line to test, including the five-shade Nude Beach mineral eye shadow palette ($52, pacificillusionsbeauty.com). The medium rich brown Huntington and peach Aruba shades quickly became weekend staples. Whereas I tend to dress my lids up a bit more for evenings out, these no-fuss shades went well with my jeans-and-tee combos and breezy sundresses.

While I’m usually able to skip a skin highlighter, I’ve been applying Diamond Cove over the dark circles under my eyes. One way-too-early morning, I woke up and actually tried to wipe off what I thought was lingering dark eye shadow from the night before. It wasn’t (yes, I had dark circles that bad). Thankfully, Pacific Illusions’ highlighter helped me look presentable. I also swiped the powder above my brows and on my brow bone for a radiant, eye-popping glow.

Dune, a light neutral sand, and Half Moon Bay, a creamy neutral, were also gorgeous. While they didn’t work as well with my tanned skin, a lighter-skinned gal could blend them together for a nude look or a darker-skinned lady for a daring, eye-popping look.

Each mineral shadow went on flawlessly and lasted throughout the day. As the palette’s name suggests, each shade was reminiscent of sandy shores –especially when blended. They’re ideal for layering; if you aren’t pressed for time, you can have fun mixing the shades to create custom blends of your own.

I used these shadows with the Sandal pressed mineral blush ($22, pacificillusionsbeauty.com), which gave my cheeks a glowing pink tint. The touch of shimmer made my entire face glow, but didn’t appear overwhelming. I completed my no-frills look with Gold Coast paraben free mineral shimmer lip gloss ($28,pacificillusionsbeauty.com), which transformed my lips into a shimmering golden beach –at least in my head.

These summery picks are gorgeous and cruelty-free. What more could you want for your weekend beauty look? (Answer: Nothing!)
